About the Course

Abrasive wheels present numerous risks and challenges when in use in the workplace. This course is designed to enable operators to use abrasive wheels safely in an automotive or ELV dismantling environment.

  • Identify the risks associated with using abrasive wheels.

  • Understand the law and who is responsible.

  • Understand safety measures including PPE, training, guards, rests & hot work permits.

  • Identify types of abrasive wheel, anmd how to select the correct one.

  • Demonstrate how to set up and mount the wheel – ring test, how to mount, flanges and blotters.

  • Explain pre-use safety checks – speed, power and the use of grinding fluid.

  • Understand abrasive wheel maintenance - truing, dressing, balancing, handling and storage.

Who is this course suitable for?

  • This course is designed for those who require a legal and theoretical overview, relating to abrasive wheel use equipment under the Provision of Use of Work Equipment 1998 (PUWER), (all staff who use Abrasive Wheels in the workplace receive Abrasive Wheels training in the safe use of tools and change of wheels).

  • This course is theory-only and therefore does not offer any practical application.


  • This course is suitable to those who require an awareness of the legislation, and the hazards and risks associated with abrasive wheels.

  • This training course will provide delegates with the knowledge on what is needed to safely mount, dress, set and use abrasive wheels in compliance with the current Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 PUWER 98.

Full Description:

Around half of all accidents involving abrasive wheels are due to unsafe working practices and operator error. If you work with abrasive wheels then following strict health and safety practices is paramount in order to protect both yourself and others from harm.


This Abrasive Wheels course will provide you with an introduction to working safely with abrasive wheels so that you can easily identify the hazards, understand the risks and know which control measures are needed to prevent injury and ill-health.
