Crushed by a Car: A £45 Course Could Have Prevented It!

HSE Discovered that the two post vehicle lift swing arms were not locked into position

A man has been left with life-changing injuries and is unable to work after a car fell from a two-post lift onto him at Car Spa & Tyres Ltd in Liverpool. The incident, investigated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), revealed that the garage had no safe system of work in place and had failed to train staff in the proper and safe use of the lifting equipment.

The company has been fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £20,000 in court costs.

This tragedy could almost certainly have been avoided. A £45 training course could have equipped staff with the knowledge needed to identify risks, secure the lift correctly, and prevent the devastating outcome.

It’s a stark reminder that training will always be cheaper than a workplace tragedy. Don’t Learn Safety by Accident - make sure your staff are competent, confident, and compliant when operating high-risk equipment, especially vehicle lifts. If you work in a automotive environment and are operating equipment that you haven't received training on, then you must speak up! Raise your concerns with your employer immediately.

Learn the lessons in the classroom - not the hard way, on the workshop floor!
